Spotlight on Morphine

Clark Anderson

The alternative rock group Morphine made a name for themselves on public and college radio during the mid-nineties with their self described "low-rock". The three piece formed in Cambridge Massachusetts in 1989 and derived it's sound with an unusual combination of instruments. Lead singer Mark Sandman combined his baritone, crooner voice with a custom two string bass guitar which he played with a slide. Dana Colley, the bands co-founder primary played the baritone saxophone, sometimes combined with a soprano or tenor sax which he played simultaneously.

Morphine released 5 studio albums as well as several B-sides and live compilations. The last Morphine studio album, The Night, was released after Sandman's death in 1999 of a heart attack on stage at age 46.

I was kind of a dreamy child - a Curious George baby. As a child, people told me they thought I'd grow up to be a poet. You have to wonder what kind of kid someone would say that to." - Mark Sandman

Featured video is a rare performance on French TV show circa 1994/95.

I think I was born just at the right time to get this band...

A shade younger, and I'd have no direct knowledge of the 80s pop music that, while providing some distant influence on the group, was more the direct antithesis of the moody, reverberant and sonorous music of Morphine.

If I was much older, then I would have probably been too absorbed in the hardcore punk movement that preceded them to take notice. Even worse, I could have been sucked into the Later Stage of Disco that engulfed the Western world... or maybe Rod Stewart, god forbid...

Instead, I fell right into that languorous period of time where coming of age meant rebelling against hair bands; where Siouxie and the Banshees, or Ministry, or Jesus and Mary Chain said it loud and clear; or where coffee was more home than house...

While I've been feeling a bit old lately (just passed a nondescript birthday) a post about Morphine brings me back to what's been so great about my experiences.

If you don't know Morphine, you should make it a point to get to know them.

There's no band like them.
Every album is amazing.
Mark Sandman is a legend.
